After they received their wedding photographs I received a lovely email back - "Thanks the the CD, it arrived today....we're both so pleased. We're really glad we had you there to photograph our day, it felt like you really 'got us' and what our day was about." .

Richmond Park in Surrey - A lovely location for your wedding photographs.
I had been booked to photograph a wedding in Surrey and was looking forward to the day. During my pre wedding meeting with the bride and groom we discussed the plans for the day and the type of photographs they wanted (informal and natural which was just my style). The wedding was to be held at St Mary Magdalene's Church in Mortlake and the reception at First Floor Bar and Restaurant in Kingston upon Thames. The day would start at the church where I would cover the ceremony and capture lots of natural wedding photographs along with a few group shots. Then we would all move onto the reception, however the couple said they would like to stop off on the way so I could create a selection of photos just of them but where undecided about the location. A cup of tea later the decision was made. We would stop off at Richmond Park in Surrey (more recently famous for Fenton the dog chasing deer) for their set of wedding photographs, I love the park and knew of several locations that we could use. On the day time was limited and with it being sunny it seemed everyone in Surrey was in the park. Parking was abit of problem for me but I managed to find a spot, thanks to some friendly visitors to the park (it's amazing how friendly and helpful people are when I'm out and about with a bride and groom taking their photo...must bring out the best in people) and we headed off to get the photographs.

We walked through the park stopping off at certain points to take a photograph. The sun was strong and creating dark shadows but with a hint of fill in flash they were soon softened. I used the light to my advantage as well and created some nice silhouettes against the skyline. Time was pressing on and so after a quick flick through of the photos on the back of my camera I made sure the couple were happy and we made our way back to the cars. Whilst walking back along the road to the car park, inspiration struck and I had a great idea for a photo.....but will we have time? Luckily the idea was a photograph of them leaving the park in the classic open top sports car they had hired for the day. They agreed so the game was on. I knew I would only have one attempt at this and at best have time to fire off only a few frames as they went by, not ideal but worth a go. I checked my camera and choose my spot. I could imagine the photo already which is nothing new but as any good photographer will tell you that's the easy bit..... recreating it is the fun bit. The light was good and I fired off a couple of test shots on passing cars. One problem was traffic, the photo would be spoilt if another car or cyclist (anyone who knows the park would understand the joy of trying to over take a cyclist and still keep within the speed limit) was in the shot. Also should I use the safer option of a long lens to get the picture? Tricky as the image I wanted had to be shot on a wide angle so I could see as much of the beautiful park as possible. Decisions, decisions, decisions. No it had to be a wide angle shot so a quick change of lens, check the settings and ok here they come. I panned the camera as it drove past and fired off as many shots as possible. "It could be a great shot" I thought to my self as walked back to my car. Dare I have a look? have I got time? Was the car moving to fast, did I have a fast enough shutter speed, was it sharp? But I put those thoughts aside as I still had the wedding reception to photograph.

Well as you can see everything worked like a dream and no builders van in the photo either.... Success and the couple loved the photo too.

Bartholomew Barn, Kirdford, West Sussex - A summer wedding

A beautiful summer's day, a lovely couple and a great venue....
Bartholomew Barn at Kirdford in West Sussex (near to Petworth) was my venue for this wedding. I attended the wedding with the brief to create informal and relaxed wedding photographs of the day. This rural wedding venue is a converted barn with loads of natural light and friendly and professional staff. On this summers day it really was a joy to be asked to photograph the wedding and we all had a great day.

The bride and groom requested this picture of their reflection in the pond. I felt the image needed some help to bring it alive and so I worked on the image in photoshop and kept the colour in the flowers whilst turning the rest of the photograph black and white. West Sussex wedding photographer Scott Ramsey talks about his photography style and how he covers a wedding

Whilst I photograph a wedding I like to observe and capture the natural photographs as they happen during the course of the day. I have been a photographer for over 20 years now and my approach has always been the same from when I started my career covering a news stories for a newspaper's and now photographing a wedding. I was taught by the best (my dad) and brought up on stories of when photographers created pictures and not enemies by hounding so called celebs outside night clubs. Read my Bio .
Photography to me is about observing people and recording moments. Yes sure I spend time taking group shots and creating "magazine style" couple shots during the day as well (and enjoy it). But photography to me is about documenting a persons life and looking out for those moments everybody else is too busy to see. Technical expertise and great cameras helps but having the skills and empathy to understand people and get along with them is just as important.

Wedding Photography at Arundel Town Hall in West Sussex
Arundel Town Hall in West Sussex is a great location for me to work as a wedding photographer. I have photographed several weddings here over the years and I just love it as a location and venue. The 19th century grade 2 listed building is in the heart of the beautiful market town and of Arundel. It has high ceilings, and great natural light with lots of locations just outside the front door which includes Arundel Castle.

West Sussex Wedding Photographer Scott Ramsey talks about one of his favourite wedding photographs

During a wedding ceremony in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex a bride smiles at her husband. The picture was taken by the West Sussex wedding photographer Scott Ramsey.

I have been a wedding photographer in West Sussex for many years now and it’s the best job in the world. I love being part of a couples wedding day and feel honored when asked to photograph a wedding in the beautiful county of West Sussex. My job on the day is not just to take photographs of the wedding dress, flowers and take some group shots but also to capture the emotion, fun and excitement just as the photograph above shows.

The photograph was taken whilst I photographed a wedding in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex. During the wedding ceremony at the Holy Trinity Church the bride briefly looked over to her husband and smiled. I love this picture as it really captures the brides happiness during her wedding day.

The story behind the photograph
I had positioned myself directly in front of the couple (with the relevant permission of course) so I could photograph the couple during the ceremony. I really like this location whilst photographing a wedding ceremony, however it's not always possible to get in the right position if the church is small. Luckily for me on this occasion I was allowed and about half way through the proceedings I saw the picture. Due to my position only I could see her smile (the very reason why I like this spot in the church) and I fired off a few frames hoping the light levels where not too low and that she held her gaze long enough for me to capture the fleeting moment for ever. At the time I was using my old Nikon D100 and shooting on a high ISO as the light level was low. The moment only lasted a few seconds but my experience and familiarity with the camera allowed me to get the picture. However photography is never a precise science and as you can imagine I was dying to check the monitor on the back of the camera to see if I had got the shot and most importantly it was not woolly , but unfortunately there was no time for that as the ceremony was continuing and I had more pictures to take. Thankfully later on during the wedding reception at The Ravenswood Hotel, West Sussex I did manage to have a look and everything was looking OK. The image was a little dark however I felt confident that I could lighten it up, as I shoot all my photographs in the Nikon raw format which really helps. BeforeI said goodbye to the couple I even had a chance to show them the picture which they loved.
I hope to think the bride will look back on the photograph and be immediately transported back to that very moment during her wedding day...I know I do.

Camera Settings
The picture was taken on a Nikon D100 with the ISO set to about 1500. The camera was handheld and no flash was used. I was used a 50 mm Nikon lens and the speed was 1/40 second at F2.8. The camera was set to aperture priority.

Against all the odds my corporate photography gallery update is almost complete....

I don't want to moan, but my back's aching...I think I have a cold on the way, Gizzy the cat keep's tripping me up because he's hungry again and I nearly sliced my finger off. Also cabin fever is setting in (best summed up by the Muppets in this video) ...Guess I'm being grumpy...the reason is that I'm on day three of being stuck in front of the computer updating my website. I'm just not designed to sit in one spot for so long. Well I say slice my finger off...it's more like a graze but as I reassuringly explained to my girlfriend "I think I'll survive..but it really does hurt". So after an emergency trip to the supermarket to purchase a "Ouch Plaster" and after adding a smiley face I did feel better ...Good Times.

To make things worse over the last few days spring has sprung here in the UK but unfortunately rather than being out and about taking pictures of springy things..I've been stuck in the office trying to be a master website designer and update my website. But it needs to be done and it's all part of running my own photography business. I could employ a web person but I like to be able to update things when I want (often late at night). But honestly, I don't know how people spend all day doing it. I don't want to offend anybody but after 3 days my brain is fried and I'm officially bored...but it's worth it as the new pictures look great. This time around I concentrated on the corporate photography side of things and new photo galleries which can by viewed on my corporate photography page. I think it's important that I have a wide selection of photographs on my site and with the help of some past clients I have managed to get permission to use some of my pictures. I have a web design program that I use for the site however for photo galleries I prefer to use adobe lightroom. The software enables you to create and publish a photo gallery really easily. Think I'll start work on the rest of the galleries now....or maybe I'll escape the computer screen for the rest of the day and get back to what I do best taking pictures ....ummm decisions decisions.
